Szilveszter (New Year's Eve)

I really like that some of the Europeans have a one-word name for New Year's Eve - and it sounds like Sylvester, and when you throw in Tweety, that's a party!

We spent our last day of 2012 with an extremely picturesque drive through Triglav National Park

over to Bled castle

and back in time for the extremely loud NYE party just outside our window, which my wife cleverly captured at midnight

The kids stayed up until 2am! watching dog movies while Uncle Jan and I played Uno and drank beer and the women and small ones slept. It was the perfect party.

Memories of 2012

2012 was overall a very dramatic year for us with preparation for leaving our house.  Here are some favorite memories from the year:

Christmas break trip to Virginia
Anna's ballet recital

Camping at Cape Henelopen

Trip to Assateague and this stop at Frontier Town

The community garden... maybe our plot is in there somewhere

Slovenia ski day

Our holiday trip to Slovenia included a day at the Kanin ski resort on the border of Italy.  The lift ride up is 30 minutes - there was only snow on the mountain tops. The lift behind me goes up and over across the border.

Ready for action at the top
A beautiful place - on a clear day you can see the Adriatic.  The kids had a great time skiing in the big warmup bowl - unfortunately the only boots I could find were so small on my feet that I couldn't actually ski!  Doh. But they didn't complain, and how could I?

Moving Day

And so it came, after months of wondering if it ever would.  The test of all our months of endless preparations, and we found ourselves in a sweaty fervour, cramming items into the four large suitcases we would be taking that would supply us for the next 3.5 seasons, hardly having a fraction of a section to reflect on the finality of what was about to happen.

Finally, late in the afternoon, after running non-stop from task to task since the day before, we had to surrender to the fact that an airplane would soon leave the ground and whisk us away from these urgent cares.  The time had come to say goodbye.

We pulled our many bags and suitcases out of the house and closed and locked it for the last time, proud of its shining condition we were finally able to achieve.

Then came the hard part...saying goodbye to our dear friends next door, who had been our family over the past seven years.

Friends since birth, and before - lives woven together by time. What we were about to do was almost unthinkable.

But here we go, with hearts in suspense...

Farewell, until we meet again!

Our Last Family Night

...at Glenwood Ave.  The pictures say it all - ok, I'll spell it out - there was ice cream involved.

It's horrible...

It's irresistable...

It's questionable.
