May Day

May 1st is a national holiday in much of Europe I believe, and is a day off from work in Hungary.  Seems to be like Memorial Day to us Americans.

So on this day, I ventured out with the men in the morning to cut a swath amongst the grass at a popular natural location out in the forest around the village.  The area is called Mohos (MO-hosh) and contains a lake, which if I understand properly contains the largest floating island in all of Europe. Anyway it's a nice peaceful forest with lots of trails for biking.

At lunchtime we lugged out all kinds of picnic stuff and set up.  Soon after arrived the coachman with his horses, giving rides

which the kids enjoyed very much.

We had brought every kind of land vehicle imaginable, including our Golf there

and motorcross bike, which every male over 10 got a chance to ride.

The adults enjoyed the carriage ride as well

here comes the party crowd -

and the ping-pong was very popular

We brought the village toughs in case there was trouble.

But, the girls kept themselves under control, and merely satisfied themselves to some pong.

'Uncle Johnny', a favorite of the kids, made them their own fire and later he and I went for a run with the kids while they biked through the forest paths.  He was a national ping-pong champion in the late 60's BTW, and it was his table we were using.

Here is Uncle Johnny holding off the wolves.  These other guys are pretty darn good players themselves.

And finally, sparklers for the kids! Overall a great time was had by all.
